News From Gretchen #4

I almost forgot the most important part of the project—the library itself!  With the assistance of St. John’s, Mulundi Primary School has converted one of the classrooms into the library.  It is a very nice building, with work benches and chairs aplenty for everyone.  Shelving will be erected once the School Committee has a chance to determine what type of shelving to install; i.e., whether to locking cabinets or open shelving.  As I mentioned before, the hope is that a reading culture will develop among the students at Mulundi Primary School.  Traditionally, Kenya is an oral culture, and so development of a strong reading culture is a recent development for the students of Mulundi.  I have met many of them, and they are excited about having a library on the school grounds.
